“It’s so hard to prepare for those two subjects I need for further studies!”
“You need Math and Physics for technical school, I need Chemistry and Biology for medical school. We both attend elective classes, but only two hours a week—nowhere near enough to perform very well at a high-level exam. A private tutor? That should have happened ages ago—impossible to find one mid-year!”
So what’s the strategy? Do you just drift through the year with a bunch of subjects you won’t even graduate in and then try to prepare for university after the final exams?
Absolutely not! Daytime hours slip away while you’re stuck in place, even though you have an enormous volume of material to master for university entrance. Without support, you’re headed for disaster.
That’s when you need a leader who makes bold decisions, even if it means rewiring school routines or schedules—and who can push innovation through resistance.
At Comenius, we’ve used this approach for years:
from 11th grade upward, every semester we run a focused “marathon week” for each core subject. From morning until late afternoon (ok, not always until evening), students deep-dive into one subject crucial for their university entrance. During a Chemistry marathon, we spend a full week on Chemistry. Then a week of Physics, followed by a week of History, Math, and so on. Every student eventually covers the subject they plan to take at an advanced level. During this intense, marathon-style week, we cover the entire advanced-level exam syllabus.
This one-week deep dive gives students from Comenius a significant competitive advantage.
Is this done in public schools too? Or is it unimaginable there? I’m not sure—clearly it’s not standard in state institutions. It’s not common, even though kids absolutely love it—because it’s incredibly efficient!
Do students miss a week of regular classes?
Yes, they skip non-marathon subjects for that week, but they don’t skip school. There’s no need to excuse absences because everyone is onboard, and the leader pushes the crew harder than usual. They might fall slightly behind in other subjects, but students quickly catch up. It’s no more absence than having a cold or going skiing.
Let’s be honest: students arrive dead tired to electives held in the 8th or 9th lesson. Yet in most high schools, this is the standard time for deepening knowledge in key subjects for further studies
At Comenius, we instead use CONCENTRATED, INTENSIVE SUBJECT-FOCUSED TEACHING to support students’ exam preparation.
Thanks to effective learning, there is aa high rate of university admission among our graduates. They prepare with the persistence of a marathon runner, so that later—with a gold medal around their neck—they can stand on the winner’s podium of university admission.
