You’re not going to ask for raspberry syrup, are you? • #gyereacomeniusba
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” “An adult.” “But what exactly?” “I don’t know.” (shrugs)
Parents face a real crisis if this exchange happens in their child’s final school year.
What next? Well… you’re supposed to go to some university…
Let’s pause for a teaching moment!
How did we, schools and parents, end up here—together? We think we’ve done everything!
School says: “We passed them on every exam because they’re so cute,” “We waited patiently for them to catch up,” “We believed they’d finally study.”
Parents say: “The school will fix it,” “It’s not ideal, but it’s acceptable—nothing’s really wrong, even if the kid cares about nothing,” “At worst, we’ll delay university by a year.”
Many parents choose Comenius so their child’s education will secure a seamless generational takeover of the family business. Anyone who’s built a company knows the summit of your market niche isn’t handed to you—you climb there with sweat and blood.
So what do we want our kids to be? A sweet little raspberry syrup… or a fierce little lion cub?
Definitely the latter! But if things go towards the syrup, how do we change course?
At Comenius, every October we award the school’s Raspberry Prize to the graduating students who have wasted their own time and their parents’ resources by doing absolutely nothing..
The winners receive their prize on stage—forced smiles, sparse applause—from the entire school community of teachers and students.
And then, almost overnight, they rocket into study mode, and the recipients start to improve academically!
Isn’t that amazing? You can educate gently, not harshly, yet effectively!
But that’s not all in our teaching toolkit! The Comenius Golden Award honors graduates who consistently excel academically, athletically, or through community service. We’ll introduce them and their mindsets in a future post.
DON’T FIT IN THE BOX?
COME TO COMENIUS!
